When should I not part-exchange my car?

Part-exchange is convenient, but it isn't always the best financial decision — there are specific situations where selling privately is likely to leave you noticeably better off.

Scenarios where private sale usually wins:

  • Higher-value cars — the private sale vs part-exchange gap tends to widen in absolute terms as a car's value increases, so on a more expensive vehicle, the amount left on the table by part-exchanging can be significant
  • Excellent condition or low mileage — cars that are genuinely well above average for their age and mileage often don't get fully credited for that in a quick part-exchange valuation, since dealers are pricing in a fairly standardised view of "average" condition
  • When the offer is well below market value — if a part-exchange offer is significantly lower than what similar cars are privately selling for, that gap is worth questioning rather than accepting on convenience alone, especially if you have the time to sell privately instead

When part-exchange still makes sense despite this:

If your priority is speed, simplicity, and avoiding the effort of dealing with private buyers, part-exchange can still be the right call even at a lower price — it comes down to how much your time and hassle-avoidance is worth to you personally, weighed against the extra money a private sale could realistically bring in.
