Before handing over any money, work through this checklist:

• Documents — V5C logbook, service history, MOT certificates, and proof the seller's name matches the logbook
• Bodywork — check panel gaps are even and paint colour matches across panels, which can indicate previous accident repair
• Tyres and brakes — uneven tyre wear can point to alignment or suspension issues
• Engine bay — look for fresh oil leaks, corroded battery terminals, or mismatched hose clamps suggesting recent work
• Interior wear vs mileage — heavily worn pedals or seats on a "low mileage" car are a red flag
• VIN and plate — confirm the chassis number under the bonnet matches the V5C and the number plate
• A vehicle history check — run one before you view the car, and again just before paying, to catch outstanding finance, write-offs, or mileage discrepancies
