How do I buy a car from a private seller in the UK?
The process, step by step:
- Find the car and contact the seller — ask questions by phone or message before arranging a viewing
- View the car at the seller's address — this should match the address on the V5C logbook
- Run a vehicle history check — ideally before you view, and again just before paying
- Inspect and test drive — check bodywork, documents, and take it for a proper drive
- Negotiate a price if needed, based on condition, mileage, and anything flagged in the history check
- Agree payment method — bank transfer is safest, with a paper trail
- Complete the paperwork — the seller notifies the DVLA of the change of keeper (online is fastest, or by post using the V5C), and gives you the green "new keeper supplement" slip (V5C/2) from the logbook — this is your temporary proof of ownership until your new V5C arrives
- Arrange insurance before driving away — you're not covered to drive the car home without it
Keep a written record of the transaction, including the agreed price and the seller's details, in case of any dispute later.
