Can I return a used car bought from a private seller?

Generally, no — not automatically. Private car sales in the UK aren't covered by the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which only applies to purchases from a trader (dealer). Once you've bought a car privately and it matches the seller's description, you typically have no automatic right to return it or get a refund, even if it later develops a fault.

The main exception is if the seller misrepresented the car — for example, lying about its history, mileage, or condition. In that case, you may have grounds to pursue a claim under misrepresentation law, though this usually means small claims court, not a simple return.

This is exactly why checks before purchase matter more in a private sale than a dealer sale — there's very little recourse afterward.
